Federal Pell Grants
Executive summary by Alison Cole

Pell Grant
Pell grants are federally funded grants that help full and part time college students in the United States. There are about 5.3 million people currently receiving the Pell Grant to help pay for their education.
The application process for a Pell Grant begins with the completion of a FAFSA application. These applications are available at high schools, colleges, vocational schools, libraries and the FAFSA website. Once you have turned in your FAFSA form, you will receive a notice if you qualify for the Pell Grant.
Student whose total family income is less than $45,000, are eligible to receive Pell Grants. To qualify for Pell Grant you must also be an undergraduate student registered in a program leading towards a degree or certificate.
You can receive $400 to $4,050, a year from a Pell Grant, with the average grant usually around $2,200. The amount of money awarded is based on the price of the school you are attending, financial situation, family size and whether you are a full time student.
Federal Pell grants provided for qualified applicants are also known as Basic Educational Opportunity Grants or BEOGs. The amount of pell grants being given are depended on some of factors like family contribution of the student, the institution’s cost for attending classes, on whether the student is going to be a part time or full time student and length of time in terms of academic years.
The benefit of pell grants is that they are not limited to a single institution only. You can apply as many pell grant funds as they can handle from different schools for as long as you are well-screened and declared to be in dire financial need. The Congress established a formula followed by the Education department to determine whether an applicant is truly in financial need and in what degree. If the student is living independently, he or she is evaluated based on his or her income sources, or his or her parents’ income and sources, if he or she is still dependent on them for financial support.
Applicant must fill up the application form. Then he or she will be provided wit a Student Aid report or the school may get a student information record sheet which informs them if the said student is determined to be eligible for the pell grant and by how much is he or she eligible.
